Pet Types

Not all pets are equal. If they were there would be no point in taming new ones. Each pet species has certain advantages and disadvantages in terms of stats or abilities which lead them to different styles of play. Plus, its a lot easier to strike fear in the hearts of your enemy when you sic a BEAR on them than a turtle or ostrich! It is generally accepted that there are three different classes of pets. Tanking pets which stress high armor and health but low damage. DPS pets that have high damage but low armor or health. And balanced pets that are well rounded but rarely excel at anything. There are also certain pets out there known as caster pets which you should avoid, but there will be more on that later.
Tanking pets are primarily used while leveling and questing solo. Their primary function is to keep the enemy's attention and out of your ranged weapons dead zone. Their main function is to take a beating for you so - 41 -
they need high health and armor. High health is slightly better than armor though because armor does nothing for magic damage. The five best tanking pets are
Bears- Bears have the best overall survivability of the hunter pets and moderate damage. They have the highest HP of any pet and the second highest armor. They also have access to some good damage dealing moves for when you need them to DPS instead of tank. As an added bonus they are all omnivorous which makes feeding them much cheaper.
Boars- Boars are the second best pet in terms of survivability. They have less HP than bears, but usually have higher armor. I prefer using a boar over a bear when leveling or grinding though because of the ability Charge. Its a great opening move which helps my pet gain aggro fast and lets me shoot sooner. Also omnivorous like a bear.
Scorpid- Scorpids have moderate survivability compared to other tanking pets and are very situational. Their main selling point is a stackable poisen attack that when combined with a serpent sting can kill a fleeing mob. It is also a great PVP pet which makes it a good choice for a PVP server.
Warpstalker (Non caster)- Warpstalker's have about as much survivability as a Scorpid and are listed as a tanking pet because of their Warp attack. You can use it like a boar's Charge to quicken your fighting time.
Other species like tallstriders, crabs and crocolisks are also considered tanking pets but they will either have low armor and high health or the other way around. The only reason you would want one of these as a tanking pet is if you are looking for something strange or fun.
DPS pets are used when instancing or in PVP. The things to consider when choosing a DPS pet is first what abilities they can learn and second what DPS stats they will get. The abilities your pet gets will determine how much damage they will be able to put out and how long they will be able to do it. If you have moves that use up a lot of your pets focus fast you will do lot of damage fast, but then slack off while they try to regen. These types of pets are best used in PVP since you want to focus on burst damage. If you have moves that are more focus efficient you will do more sustained DPS and are best in a PVE situation. The five best DPS pets are
Cats-Cats have the highest potential DPS of all pets. Mostly this comes through their wide array of abilities. Not only pure DPS ones like Claw, but special abilities like Prowl.
Raptor- Raptors come in as a close second for best DPS pet. The only reason they are second is because they don't have as many abilities as a cat and have ever so slightly lower DPS stats.
Ravager-Ravagers come in at second place because their DPS is situational. One of their primary attacks is Gore, which if everything goes right is a higher DPS ability than Claw or Bite. But that is only if it manages to do double damage and crit often.
Owl- Owls are an interesting pet because of their special abilities that can debuff your opponent. You probably wouldn't want to bring one to an instance, but they can be good in solo play.
Wind Serpent- Wind serpents have average regular damage melee stats. But their Lightning Breath ability is the highest DPS ability in the game. Its best situated for burst fights though since it will eat up your pets focus very quickly.
Balanced pets are built around being ok at everything, but great at nothing. If you foresee yourself having to spend a long time away from the stable master you might want to bring along a balanced pet because you don't know what you will face.
Wolves- Wolves are considered the best balance pet because of their good DPS and survivabilty. Their Howl ability is their main selling point though since it can increase your entire group's Dps.
Dragonhawks- Like Wolves their main selling point is a special ability. Their AOE fire attack can be useful when farming large groups of mobs or when fighting groups in PVP.
Serpents- Serpents are similar to Scorpids because of their poison attack. But their have slightly higher attack and slightly lower defense than a scorpid so they are not a very good tanking pet.
